This field guide documents Rhodes department store sites across Northern California. Each entry records the building’s original anchor tenant, architectural context, and current use. Unlike a corporate history, this guide focuses on the physical remains of the stores themselves—the structures that still shape mall corridors long after the signage has changed. Many of these sites began as standalone Rhodes stores, while others occupied earlier department store anchors such as Kahn's. Rhodes department store occupied a brief but important chapter in Northern California retail history. During the postwar boom, the chain expanded into many of the region's new shopping centers, bringing department store shopping to growing suburban communities from Sacramento to the Bay Area and the Central Valley. Although the Rhodes name disappeared in 1975, its stores helped define an era when retailers were racing to follow new housing developments, shopping centers were replacing traditional downtown districts, and department stores were becoming essential anchors of suburban life.
